The Poem

Madeira and A Following Sea. by Neil William Holland

Oh Madeira I leave you as you leave me
shipwrecked, adrift on the wave of a day,
heading towards my sad horizon
each mile travelled one further mile away.

But you make me see white sails, a ship of angels
“You will return,” I hear them say.
Recalling my way to your glad horizon
my sadness unravels and hope gains sway.

Shipwrecked no more I lie in the fold
of a fixing sun with your love to hold.
Calmed by your hand and your voice of gold.
You make me see white sails, a ship of angels.

Now the salt taste gone of a thirsting sea,
alive with the memories you gave to me
Madeira, I love you as you loved me.
You made me see white sails, a ship of angels.

In 2014 a brilliant Florida musician J. Rivas invited me from America to collaborate with him on a project combining my poetry with his original musical composition. We had become known to each other via a creative website. I took Jimmy's music with me from the U.K. to my holiday destination at the Savoy Gardens Hotel in Madeira where I wrote the poetry for the music over several days sitting on my balcony looking across Funchal and out to sea. I had by this time fallen in love with this beautiful island and its people. I decided that the words should follow the feelings I had about the island of Madeira but also were to be a metaphor about love and hope. They also had to blend with the musical narrative Jimmy had performed. I felt Jimmy's melody demanded that the words and music should have an emotional connection.

Whilst at the hotel I met Soprano Adele Davies who was also the holiday rep and she kindly allowed me to record her during a a concert one evening. I asked Adele if I could use part of her vocal in my creative project and the end result is this track. The inspiration is the beautiful music of J. Rivas, the beauty of Adele's voice who opens and closes the track, and especially this beautiful Madeira Island and its wonderful people.

Please enjoy, it is free and written for everyone and anyone who loves Madeira. It was crafted by three people destined to be thousands of miles apart. Creativity is such a wonderful thing, It brings people together. Peace to all.
